Protector for the win.
I am playing as a casual player and have reached stage 20+ using mostly protector characters. Abraham, Fanya, Kate, Alice and R is the line up I'm using. Also the best way to use your gold is for head hunt. Accumulate atleast 42k. That would allow you to make 7 pull and a guaranteed pull of the specific character of your choice.
